Michael Chappell. Forensic Analyst. CBC.
Michael Chappell is
one of New Zealand’s
leading Computer Forensic Analysts and is currently studying towards a BBS
in Information Technology and Business management.
After joining the New Zealand Police in 1977 and retiring in
1999, Michael continued his training in Computer Forensics and Data
Recovery both here in New Zealand
and in the United States
of America.
In his later years
with the New Zealand
Police, as a Senior Detective, he investigated a number of Computer and
Internet related crimes. Prior to his involvement with the Christchurch Fraud Unit, Michael was an Analyst in the
Criminal Intelligence Section in Christchurch.
Before leaving the
Police, Michael became involved in a private capacity, in the examination
of Pirated and Counterfeit Software for a Private Investigation Company,
contracted to a major software corporation.
Following his
retirement from the Police, Michael traveled to Orlando, Florida,
where he received training in Computer Forensics with IACIS (The
International Association of Computer Investigative Specialists).
After successfully
completing the Basic Training Course in 2000 and the Advanced Course the
following year, Michael completed and passed external examinations with
IACIS, where he obtained the qualification of Certified Forensic Computer
Examiner in 2002, which has since expired in 2005. This is an internationally recognised qualification and is
only held by approximately 3-4 Forensic Practitioners in New Zealand.
This certification is subject to a 3 year re-certification process, which Michale has not completed. Michael is not a member of IACIS and does not represent himself to be a member.
While
traveling in the USA
for training, Michael also attended the Techno Security Conferences held in
South Carolina.
This conference is also an internationally recognised conference attended
by over 500 delegates worldwide. The conference is sponsored by major
Information Technology, Security and Forensic Software companies from all
over the world.
After re-establishing his
business in 2003, Michael has conducted numerous forensic examinations for
private business’s, private individuals, Barristers and Solicitors and
major corporations. He has also spoken to a number of business groups regarding
employee related issues, involving computer misuse.
